There are a lot of methods floating around the Internet these days to supposedly help you generate web traffic. They range from the truly ridiculous, to systems that actually work.

I’ve run several web businesses full time for over five years now. I’ve tried just about every traffic generating method out there. Let me save you some time and tell you what doesn’t work. At least it didn’t for me.

Useless Tactics:

Free for all directories: Don’t bother spending your time on these. No one is interested in your offer, only their own. Webmasters created these website so then can send you their offers in the confirmation email. No one is actually reading your ad. I’ve never had any luck with this type of traffic generating method.

Spamming With Email. Big mistake. Don’t do it. You can get yourself in trouble with your web hosting provider and your ISP. It’s annoying and illegal. You can get a big fine if you get caught. No one wants to get junk mail and they sure won’t buy from those sending it to them.

Junk Website Creating Software: Let’s face it. If it was as easy as clicking a button and having a great website that pulled in hordes of traffic, everyone would be doing it. Don’t waste your money.

Buying The Latest Money Making Programs: Too many people get suckered into buying every piece of junk that hits the market. Most of these programs don’t work. Save your money.

Tactics That Work:

PPC (pay per click): While a great method of receiving target traffic, it’s also very expensive. Who can afford to spend $400 to make $300? Not recommended for beginners.

Social Site Marketing: This method can work but takes a lot of time to implement. First you have to sign up to digg or reddit or another social network and then you have to post on a regular basis so as not to look like a spammer.

If you want to try your hand at social marketing, you may want to give Hubpages or Squiddo a try. Make a good page with lot’s of content and you’ll get some visitors from these high traffic websites.

My Favorite Method Of Getting Backlinks and Traffic:

Submitting Articles: This is my favorite traffic generating method. You not only get direct traffic from the article directories, but you also get a lot of highly targeted one-way backlinks.

Take some time to write a good article about your topic. Submit it to the top ten article directories and repeat. How do you find the best article directories to submit to? Type “top 10 article directories” or “best article directories” in your favorite search engine. Many websites maintain a list of all the top article directories.

Besides submitting the big article directories, you should also try to find niche article directories related to your topic. The more targeted the publisher compared to your website, the better. If you run a health website, then submit to health article directories.

Make it a habit to write one or more articles per week and submit them to the directories. You’ll be amazed at the traffic you’ll get after only a short time.
